A Derry City Legend and Managerial Mastermind has sadly & peacefully passed away today in the presence of his family.
Jim McLaughlin born in Derry on December 22, 1940, his journey to becoming a footballing icon began at the tender age of sixteen when he made his debut for his hometown club, Derry City. A precocious talent, he marked his arrival with a goal against Crusaders and finished his first season as the club’s top scorer with an impressive 16 goals. Jim eventually moved to England.
After a successful sixteen-and-a-half-year career in English football, McLaughlin returned to Ireland where his managerial brilliance would truly shine. His appointment as manager of Dundalk in 1974 marked the beginning of a golden era for the club. Under his stewardship, Dundalk clinched three League of Ireland titles and three FAI Cups, establishing them as a dominant force in Irish football.
McLaughlin's managerial genius was further showcased during his tenure at Shamrock Rovers. In just three seasons, he guided the club to three League Championships and two FAI Cups, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest managers in Irish football history.
His homecoming to Derry City in 1986 proved to be a triumphant return. The pinnacle of his managerial career came in the 1988/89 season when Derry City achieved the unprecedented feat of winning the League, FAI Cup, and League Cup, securing the domestic treble. This achievement remains one of the greatest in Irish football history.
Beyond his tactical acumen, McLaughlin possessed an extraordinary ability to inspire and motivate his players. His passion for the game was infectious, and was evident in the careers of countless players who thrived under his guidance.
Jim McLaughlin’s impact on Irish football is immeasurable. His memory will forever be cherished by players, fans, and all who were fortunate to witness his brilliance. A true legend of the game, his spirit will continue to inspire future generations.
