Good News for Derry City Fans: Celtic Park Gets the Green Light

It is official: Derry City FC will be playing their home games at Celtic Park this April and May.

The GAA Central Council granted permission this weekend, a decision that comes as a massive relief to thousands of supporters. It is a victory for common sense that keeps Friday night football exactly where it belongs—on the Lone Moor Road.

Why the Move? The move is happening because the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium is undergoing some major—and much-needed—upgrades. The club is lifting the old artificial pitch and replacing it with a new hybrid grass surface. While this is brilliant for the future of the team, it means the stadium will be out of commission for several weeks during the active season.

A Neighbourly Solution Without this agreement, the alternative would have been a logistical headache. Derry City faced the prospect of playing their "home" matches hours away, possibly in Sligo or Belfast. That would have been a drain on the club’s finances and a hassle for fans.

Instead, the solution was found just 400 yards down the road. Because Celtic Park sits directly adjacent to the Brandywell, the match-day routine stays largely the same. Fans do not have to travel, and the local economy keeps the benefit of match nights.

It is a practical, neighbourly solution that benefits everyone in the city. By opening their gates, the GAA has ensured that the season can continue smoothly while the Brandywell gets ready for the future.
